Akharas Bid Farewell The Sacred Departure from Maha Kumbh Mela 2025

Uttar Pradesh - As the sun rose over Prayagraj on February 3, 2025, the air was thick with devotion and the vibrant hues of Basant Panchami. This day, marking the third 'Shahi Snan' (royal bath), witnessed the 13 revered akharas—monastic orders of Hinduism—performing their final ceremonial dip in the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The spectacle was nothing short of mesmerizing: ash-smeared Naga sadhus brandishing tridents and swords, chants reverberating through the air, and the collective faith of millions culminating in this profound ritual.

Following the holy bath, a poignant tradition unfolded. The akharas lowered their 'Dharma Dhwajas' (religious flags), symbolizing the conclusion of their spiritual duties at the Maha Kumbh. This act, steeped in centuries-old customs, signifies their readiness to depart the festival grounds. A communal feast featuring 'kadhi pakoda' was shared, fostering a sense of unity and reflection among the seers.

The departure of the akharas, though anticipated, leaves an indelible mark on the Maha Kumbh. Their presence infuses the festival with spiritual gravitas, and their exit signifies a transition. While the official conclusion of the Maha Kumbh is slated for February 26, with significant bathing dates like Maghi Purnima (February 12) and Maha Shivratri (February 26) still to come, these are predominantly observed by the laity. The akharas’ departure post-Basant Panchami is a customary practice, underscoring the festival’s cyclical nature and the transient yet profound impact of these spiritual congregations.
