Betrayed Revolutionaries of Bangladesh: Protesters Turn Against Their Own Government

Dhaka - The very activists who fought for Bangladesh’s political change now find themselves at odds with the government they helped bring to power. What began as a movement for democracy has turned into a desperate fight for recognition, medical care, and security.

In July 2024, mass protests led to the downfall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Young protesters, many of them students, risked their lives facing police brutality, gunfire, and mass arrests. Their sacrifices were supposed to bring a brighter future, but instead, they now feel neglected.

On February 2, injured protesters took to the streets of Dhaka, blocking major roads and demanding justice. Many still bear the wounds of last year’s struggle, yet they claim the interim government has abandoned them. The demonstrators gathered outside the residence of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, urging him to fulfill the promises made to them.

Tensions escalated as the protesters voiced their anger, chanting for medical aid, job security, and financial support. Hours passed before government officials intervened, offering assurances that their demands would be addressed. Though the protest ended in the early hours of February 3, many remain skeptical about the government’s commitment.

This turn of events raises a critical question: was the revolution only about removing a leader, or was it meant to bring real change? If the new government fails to support those who fought for democracy, it risks losing the very legitimacy it was built upon. Bangladesh’s revolution is far from over.
