Bird Flu Panic: Telangana Shuts Borders to Andhra Poultry Amid Rising Fears
Hyderabad - In a dramatic response to the escalating avian influenza crisis, Telangana has taken unprecedented measures to shield its populace and poultry industry from the looming threat. The state has swiftly established 24 checkposts along its border with Andhra Pradesh, turning back vehicles transporting poultry from the neighboring state.
This decisive action comes on the heels of confirmed bird flu outbreaks in Andhra Pradesh's East and West Godavari districts, where thousands of chickens have perished. The Telangana government, leaving no stone unturned, has directed district collectors to raise awareness among poultry farmers and the public about the critical importance of biosecurity measures. Farmers are being urged to report any unusual poultry deaths promptly and to ensure the proper disposal of deceased birds.
The economic repercussions are already palpable. Poultry sales in districts like Khammam, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, and Kamareddy have plummeted by nearly 50%, with consumers shunning chicken in favor of fish and red meat. Despite a significant drop in prices—from Rs 270 to Rs 200 per kilogram in Khammam—buyers remain hesitant. Poultry farmers, grappling with massive losses, are in dire straits, with many reconsidering their future in the industry.
The situation is further complicated by reports of an unidentified virus causing mass poultry deaths in Telangana’s Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts. While samples have been sent for testing, officials are on high alert, implementing stringent measures to prevent a potential outbreak.
