Bold Rail Gamble by India: Connecting Bhutan Amid Regional Upheaval

Delhi - In a strategic push to strengthen ties with Bhutan, India has launched an ambitious railway project that will connect the landlocked nation to its first-ever rail network. The 69-kilometer Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail line is set to transform trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations, reinforcing India’s influence in South Asia.  

This project comes at a crucial time. With growing geopolitical tensions in Myanmar and Bangladesh, India is keen to secure its position in the region. Bhutan, which has largely remained independent of major power influences, is now a key player in South Asian diplomacy. India’s swift action in finalizing this rail link signals its intent to counter China’s growing presence in Bhutan.  

Experts believe the rail link will boost economic activity, giving Bhutan better access to global markets while strengthening India’s northeastern connectivity. However, challenges remain, including terrain complexities and environmental concerns. Bhutan’s cautious approach to modernization means the project must align with its sustainability goals.
