Howrah ATM Heist Exposes Gaps in Banking Security
Howrah- In the early hours of February 15, 2025, a daring ATM robbery shook the district of Howrah. A masked gang broke into a State Bank of India ATM in Alampur, under Sankrail police station, and fled with ₹16 lakh. The criminals used a gas cutter to access the cash vault, highlighting a serious security lapse—the ATM had no security guard on duty.
This robbery is not an isolated case. Over the past year, multiple ATM-related thefts have been reported across Howrah. One case involved ₹9 lakh being stolen from an ATM at Howrah Railway Station, with evidence pointing to insider involvement. In another case, a man tampered with several ATMs in Bally using cash-trapping devices.
The repeated incidents point to critical weaknesses in ATM security:
- Lack of On-Site Security: Many ATMs function without guards, making them easy targets for criminals.
- Insider Threats: Some cases suggest that individuals familiar with ATM operations are helping criminals bypass security.
- Advanced Tools and Tactics: Gangs are using sophisticated tools like gas cutters and cash-trapping devices to disable ATMs quickly.
These incidents raise urgent concerns for banking security. Strengthening ATM surveillance with 24/7 guards, real-time CCTV monitoring, and stricter access controls can help prevent future heists. As criminals develop new methods, banks and law enforcement must stay ahead to protect public assets and restore confidence in ATM safety.
