India-Canada Faceoff: Election Meddling Allegations Spark Diplomatic Showdown
Ottawa - Tensions between India and Canada have reached a boiling point after a Canadian inquiry report accused India of attempting to interfere in its elections. The report, which also named China as a primary actor, claimed that Indian officials and proxies engaged in efforts to sway political outcomes by providing covert financial support to select candidates.
The investigation found no direct evidence that Canadian politicians knowingly participated in these alleged schemes, nor that the interference altered election results. However, the report warned of a growing threat to democratic institutions due to foreign influence. It criticized the Canadian government for responding too slowly to such interference, raising concerns about national security and political stability.
India swiftly rejected the accusations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. The Indian government countered by accusing Canada of consistently meddling in India’s internal affairs, particularly regarding issues related to extremist elements operating from Canadian soil. According to India, Ottawa’s inaction has enabled organized crime networks and illegal migration, further straining diplomatic relations.
This diplomatic spat comes at a time when both countries are already at odds over trade and security issues. With each side standing firm, the allegations have widened an already growing rift, complicating bilateral ties and raising questions about future cooperation.
