India Launches Operation Brahma to Aid Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake
In the wake of a catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar that has claimed over 1,000 lives, India has swiftly launched "Operation Brahma" to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected people. The large-scale relief effort commenced on Saturday with the dispatch of essential supplies to the neighboring country.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal took to the social media platform X to share images of the relief operation. He announced that an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130 J aircraft carrying approximately 15 tonnes of emergency aid had successfully landed in Yangon. The relief package includes tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines.
"Operation Brahma—India acts as a first responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday's massive earthquake. Our first tranche of 15 tonnes of relief material has landed in Yangon," Jaiswal stated.
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to extending immediate support to Myanmar in its time of crisis. "India dispatches the first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar. @IAF_MCC C-130 is carrying blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, solar lamps, food packets, and kitchen sets," he posted.
India has historically played a key role as a first responder in regional humanitarian crises, emphasizing its commitment to “Neighborhood First” and “Act East” policies. In previous natural disasters affecting South and Southeast Asia, India has stepped up with timely aid, reinforcing strong regional ties.
The earthquake, which struck Myanmar on Friday, has left widespread devastation, with thousands injured and infrastructure heavily damaged. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with international aid beginning to flow in. India's swift action through "Operation Brahma" underscores its solidarity with Myanmar, ensuring immediate relief reaches those in need.
The relief operation is expected to continue in the coming days, with more supplies and assistance being planned as Myanmar battles the aftermath of one of its deadliest earthquakes in recent history.
