India Offers Assistance to Myanmar and Thailand After Devastating Earthquake

New Delhi– India has extended its support to Myanmar and Thailand after a powerful earthquake struck the two East Asian countries, leaving dozens dead and causing widespread destruction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the situation and assured that India stands ready to provide all possible assistance.

The massive tremors, which measured 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, rocked Myanmar and Thailand earlier in the day, leading to collapsed buildings, infrastructure damage, and a rising death toll. The quake's impact was also felt in several Indian cities, including Kolkata and Imphal, though no major damage was reported within India.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi conveyed his condolences and prayers for those affected by the disaster. “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he wrote.

Following the Prime Minister’s directive, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been actively coordinating with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand to assess the assistance required. Indian disaster response teams, medical aid units, and relief supplies are on standby, ready to be deployed if requested.

India has historically shared strong diplomatic ties with both Myanmar and Thailand and has often extended humanitarian aid during times of crisis. In the past, India has provided emergency relief in response to cyclones, floods, and earthquakes affecting its neighboring countries. Given the scale of destruction caused by this earthquake, experts anticipate that India’s support could include medical teams, emergency supplies, and logistical assistance for rescue and recovery operations.

Meanwhile, Indian authorities are closely monitoring the situation along the country’s northeastern borders, as aftershocks continue to pose a risk. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged residents in quake-prone regions to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.

As Myanmar and Thailand begin their recovery efforts, India’s commitment to regional cooperation and disaster response is expected to play a crucial role in assisting the affected communities. The governments of Myanmar and Thailand have yet to make a formal request for aid, but officials confirm that India remains fully prepared to offer any necessary support.
