Karnataka - In a startling revelation, India's space industry funding has plummeted by 55% in 2024, dropping to $59.1 million from $130.2 million in the previous year. This marks the first significant decline in at least five years, aligning with a global 20% downturn in space sector investments.

While the global space industry has experienced a 20% decline, India's 55% drop is notably steeper. Over the past five years, Indian space startups have raised approximately $354 million across 72 funding rounds, a fraction of the $28 billion secured by global counterparts in the same period.
Government's Response: ₹1,000 Crore Fund and Global Ambitions
In response to this funding shortfall, the Indian government approved a ₹1,000 crore ($119 million) fund in October 2024 to support space startups. Additionally, plans are underway to expand India's share of the global commercial space market by 2033.
Industry Challenges: Investment Cycles and Technological Milestones
Industry experts attribute the funding decline to natural investment cycles and investor caution as companies approach critical technological milestones. Vishesh Rajaram, managing partner at Speciale Invest, emphasized that the next 12 months will be crucial in shaping the future of India's space industry.
