Mysterious Illness Claims Lives in Rajouri: A Village in Turmoil
Jammu and Kashmir - In the remote Budhal village of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, a mysterious illness has left a community shattered. Over 45 days, 17 people, including 12 children, have succumbed to this unknown ailment. The first deaths occurred after a family meal on December 5, 2024, sparking concerns of contamination. Alarmingly, all fatalities have occurred within three interrelated families, deepening the mystery and panic among locals.

Health experts and national agencies are racing to uncover the cause of this silent killer. Preliminary investigations have ruled out common bacterial and viral infections. However, toxicological studies have revealed the presence of neurotoxins in biological samples, suggesting possible contamination from food, water, or environmental sources. Despite these findings, the exact cause remains elusive, fueling anxiety in the village.
Government Takes Action
Authorities have mobilized swiftly to address the crisis. A multidisciplinary Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, comprising experts in toxicology, pediatrics, and pathology. Door-to-door surveys and extensive testing of food, water, and environmental samples are underway. In addition, affected families have been quarantined to prevent further exposure, while health camps have been set up to monitor villagers’ conditions.
