North India in Chaos: Dense Fog Grounds Flights and Halts Trains
Delhi - For the second consecutive day, North India has been enveloped in dense fog, causing significant disruptions in air and rail travel. Major cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Amritsar have reported near-zero visibility, leading to widespread delays and cancellations.
Air Travel: A Nightmare for Passengers
At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, over 200 flights have been delayed, with more than 30 cancellations reported. Airlines have issued advisories, warning passengers of potential delays due to severe weather conditions. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses before heading to the airport to avoid inconvenience.
Rail Services: Delays Across the Board
The Indian Railways has not been spared, with over 60 trains delayed due to poor visibility. Passengers on long-distance routes are experiencing delays ranging from two to four hours. The Railway Ministry has urged travelers to stay updated on train schedules and to expect continued disruptions as the fog persists.
Road Traffic: Hazardous Conditions
Road travel has become perilous, with the dense fog leading to multiple accidents and significant slowdowns. Authorities in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana have issued advisories, urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and to avoid non-essential travel during early morning and late-night hours when visibility is at its lowest.
Health Concerns: Air Quality Deteriorates
The fog has exacerbated air quality issues, with Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 'very poor' levels. Health officials recommend that residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, limit outdoor activities and use masks to mitigate health risks.
