Rohingya Refugees Caught in Political Crossfire Ahead of Delhi Elections

Delhi - As Delhi's municipal elections approach, the Rohingya refugee community has become a central point of contention between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both parties are leveraging anti-Rohingya sentiments to galvanize their respective voter bases.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has accused the AAP of settling Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators in areas like Okhla, alleging that the party has provided them with Aadhaar cards, thereby granting them undue benefits.

In response, the BJP has intensified its rhetoric, with spokesperson Sambit Patra alleging that the AAP is patronizing illegal Rohingyas and Bangladeshis.

This political maneuvering has profound implications for the Rohingya community, who already face significant hardships. Many live in precarious conditions, lacking access to basic amenities and legal recognition. The political discourse surrounding them often overlooks their plight, reducing their complex situation to a mere electoral tool.
