Shaken But Not Broken: Powerful Earthquake Jolts Northeast India and Bangladesh
Dhaka - A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Northeast India and parts of Bangladesh, sending tremors across Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Bangladesh’s Sylhet region. The quake, originating from Myanmar’s Rakhine state near the Manipur border, occurred at 11:07 AM IST with a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers.
The shallow depth intensified the tremors, causing panic among residents. While no immediate reports of major damage or casualties have surfaced, experts warn that such seismic activity can have long-term structural impacts. The region, already prone to earthquakes, has witnessed multiple tremors recently. Just days ago, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled Nepal, affecting parts of West Bengal, and a 4.2-magnitude quake was recorded in Tibet.
Seismologists have long cautioned about the vulnerability of the Indo-Myanmar region, which sits on active fault lines. The frequent tremors highlight an urgent need for improved earthquake-resistant infrastructure, better preparedness, and stronger emergency response mechanisms.
As the dust settles, one question looms large—are we truly prepared for the ‘Big One’? While today’s quake serves as a wake-up call, it must also be a catalyst for stronger policies, robust urban planning, and heightened awareness. With nature’s unpredictability, preparedness is our only shield. The time to act is now—before the earth shakes again.
