Sheesh Mahal Controversy: A Political Storm Over Lavish Renovations

Delhi - The "Sheesh Mahal" row began when the BJP accused former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of spending ₹52 crore on renovating his official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road. Alleged luxuries include ₹5 crore remote-controlled curtains, ₹1 crore railing, and a ₹12 lakh toilet seat. The BJP claims such opulence contradicts Kejriwal's image as a champion of the common man. 

AAP’s Response and Media Blockade

In response, AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bharadwaj attempted to lead journalists on a media tour of the residence to debunk these allegations. However, they were stopped by police and Public Works Department officials, leading to a sit-in protest outside the bungalow. AAP leaders demanded transparency and accused BJP of fabricating charges to tarnish their image.  

Battle of Palaces: "Sheesh Mahal" vs. "Raj Mahal"

AAP hit back by comparing Kejriwal’s bungalow to the Prime Minister’s official residence, which they dubbed "Raj Mahal." They highlighted the ₹2,700 crore spent on the latter and challenged BJP to open it for public scrutiny. AAP argued that both properties should be equally inspected since taxpayers funded them.

As elections near, the controversy has escalated, with both parties trading accusations. While BJP accuses AAP of hypocrisy, AAP questions BJP’s double standards. The issue has also sparked a larger debate about the responsible use of public funds for official residences.
