Social Media Abuzz with Coup Rumors Amidst Military Deployments in Bangladesh
In recent days, social media platforms have been rife with rumors suggesting a possible coup in Bangladesh, following notable political developments and the increased presence of military personnel across the country, particularly in Dhaka. These speculations have been fueled by the deployment of security forces and the absence of official statements from key figures, including interim leader Professor Muhammad Yunus and Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman.
The rumors gained momentum after reports emerged about the deployment of 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in strategic areas of Dhaka and Chittagong. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), four platoons were stationed in Dhaka's Shahbagh, Matshya Bhaban, and Hotel Intercontinental areas, while six platoons were deployed in the Chittagong metropolitan area to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
Adding to the uncertainty, the Bangladesh Army recently refuted claims of an attempted coup within its ranks. A report by The Economic Times alleged that Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman attempted to overthrow Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman. In response, the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) dismissed these claims as "completely baseless" and a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation aimed at destabilizing the nation. The ISPR emphasized that the Bangladesh Army remains united and committed to its constitutional obligations under General Waqar-uz-Zaman's leadership.
The current political climate in Bangladesh has been tense since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Following mass protests, Hasina fled to India and now faces charges of crimes against humanity related to deaths during the uprising. A special tribunal has banned the publication of her speeches, citing concerns that they could interfere with ongoing investigations and trials.
As of now, neither interim leader Professor Muhammad Yunus nor Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman have addressed the coup rumors circulating on social media. The absence of official statements has led to increased speculation and uncertainty among the populace. Authorities urge citizens to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims that could further destabilize the nation.
