Tragedy Strikes En Route to Faith: Deadly Collision Claims 10 Lives Near Prayagraj
Uttar Pradesh - In a heart-wrenching incident, ten devotees lost their lives and nineteen others sustained injuries in a catastrophic road accident on the Prayagraj-Mirzapur highway. The mishap occurred near the Meja police station in Prayagraj during the early hours of Friday, as a group of pilgrims journeyed to the sacred Maha Kumbh Mela.
The ill-fated devotees, hailing from Korba in Chhattisgarh, were en route to the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers—a site revered for its spiritual significance. Their pilgrimage took a tragic turn when the Bolero vehicle they were traveling in collided head-on with a bus. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the Bolero may have dozed off, leading to the loss of control and the subsequent fatal crash.
This calamity casts a somber shadow over the Maha Kumbh Mela, a monumental event anticipated to draw approximately 400 million devotees over its six-week duration. The festival, celebrated every twelve years, is renowned as one of the world's largest religious congregations. However, this year's gathering has been marred by multiple tragedies. Just weeks prior, a pre-dawn stampede at the festival resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and left 60 others injured. The stampede was reportedly triggered when crowds surged towards the riverbanks for the auspicious ritual bath.
These successive incidents underscore the pressing need for stringent safety measures and vigilant oversight during mass gatherings of such magnitude. While the spiritual significance of the Maha Kumbh Mela remains undiminished, ensuring the safety and well-being of the pilgrims must be paramount. Authorities are urged to implement comprehensive strategies to prevent further tragedies, safeguarding both the sanctity of the event and the lives of those who partake in its rituals.
