Tragedy at Sea: Over 40 Pakistani Migrants Drown Near Morocco

Rabat - In a heart-wrenching incident, a migrant boat carrying 86 individuals capsized near Morocco, leading to the deaths of at least 44 Pakistani nationals. The vessel had embarked from Mauritania on January 2, 2025, aiming to reach Spain's Canary Islands. After 13 harrowing days at sea without rescue, Moroccan authorities managed to save 36 passengers.

A Perilous Journey

The ill-fated boat comprised 66 Pakistanis among its passengers. The migrants endured nearly two weeks in treacherous waters before assistance arrived. The prolonged delay in rescue operations has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of current monitoring and response mechanisms for migrant vessels in distress.

Official Response and Accountability

Pakistan's Foreign Office confirmed the incident, stating that their embassy in Rabat is actively coordinating with local authorities to assist survivors, who are currently housed in a camp near Dakhla. A team from the embassy has been dispatched to provide necessary support.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has demanded a comprehensive report on the tragedy and emphasized stringent action against human traffickers, declaring that no negligence will be tolerated. This stance underscores the urgent need to dismantle trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad.
