Tragedy in Chamoli: 57 Workers Trapped Under Ice - Rescue Race Against Time
Uttarakhand - A devastating avalanche struck near Mana in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, trapping at least 57 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) laborers under thick layers of snow. As rescue teams battle against harsh weather and treacherous terrain, only 16 workers have been pulled out so far, three of whom are in critical condition.
The Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are leading the massive rescue operation, but heavy snowfall and blocked roads are slowing their progress. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also rushing to the site, but time is running out for those still buried.
This disaster underscores the rising dangers in the Himalayan region, where climate change has made avalanches more frequent and deadly. The Chamoli district, already infamous for past tragedies, saw 27 mountaineers perish in a similar incident in 2022. Experts warn that unchecked construction, melting glaciers, and unpredictable weather patterns are making such disasters inevitable.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured full support for rescue efforts, but the grim reality remains—dozens of workers are still trapped, and hope dwindles with every passing hour.
