USAID Funding Sparks Political Firestorm: Allegations Fly Between BJP and Congress

Delhi - In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, the recent disclosure of a $21 million USAID initiative aimed at increasing voter turnout in India has ignited a fierce war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress. The controversy took a sharp turn when Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge alleged that Union Minister Smriti Irani had previously served as a goodwill ambassador for USAID, insinuating a connection to billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

Kharge's assertions were amplified by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, who provocatively labeled Irani as the "real agent" of Soros. This accusation stems from Irani's tenure between 2002 and 2005, during which she was associated with public health campaigns. The BJP swiftly refuted these claims, clarifying that Irani's role was as a goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization's (WHO) Oral Rehydration Salts program, a campaign endorsed by the Delhi Transport Corporation during Sheila Dikshit's tenure as Chief Minister.

The BJP further contended that the Congress party's attempts to link Irani to Soros are a diversionary tactic, especially given Soros's recent controversial remarks about India's democratic processes. Union Minister Irani has previously criticized Soros, describing him as an "economic war criminal" intent on undermining Indian democracy. She urged citizens to denounce his alleged attempts to interfere in the nation's internal affairs.

This episode underscores the volatile intersection of international influence and domestic politics in India. As both parties trade barbs, the discourse highlights the sensitivity surrounding foreign involvement in India's democratic institutions. The unfolding debate raises critical questions about sovereignty, transparency, and the integrity of electoral processes in the world's largest democracy.
