US Supreme Court Clears Extradition of Mumbai Attack Convict Tahawwur Rana to India

In a significant development, the United States Supreme Court has dismissed a review petition filed by Tahawwur Rana, paving the way for his extradition to India. According to a report by news agency PTI, the court's decision upholds previous rulings approving Rana's extradition.

Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is wanted by Indian authorities in connection with the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which claimed 166 lives and left hundreds injured. The attacks, orchestrated by the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted prominent landmarks in Mumbai, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and Nariman House.

The US court's decision marks the culmination of a lengthy legal battle by Rana to resist extradition. Indian investigators allege that Rana was deeply involved in providing material support and resources for the attacks. His role reportedly included aiding David Coleman Headley, another convict in the Mumbai attacks, in scouting locations and planning logistics.

Indian authorities have welcomed the ruling, terming it a step toward justice for the victims of the Mumbai attacks. Rana's extradition will now proceed under the terms of the US-India extradition treaty, a move seen as reaffirming the strong bilateral cooperation on counterterrorism efforts.

Rana's extradition is expected to provide a new avenue for Indian investigators to probe deeper into the planning and execution of the attacks, and hold all perpetrators accountable.
