Waqf Amendment Bill Sparks Controversy as Owaisi Leads Opposition
Delhi - The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, recently introduced in the Lok Sabha, has triggered intense political and religious debates. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi strongly opposes the bill, calling it unconstitutional and discriminatory against Muslims. He argues that it undermines Articles 14, 15, and 25 of the Indian Constitution, which protect equality, prohibit discrimination, and guarantee religious freedom.
One of the most debated aspects of the bill is the shift of authority to district collectors, allowing them to determine the status of Waqf properties. Owaisi warns that this could lead to government interference and possible misappropriation of Waqf assets. He has also criticized the bill for proposing the inclusion of non-Muslim members in Waqf boards, arguing that no other religious institutions face similar interventions.
The Telangana Waqf Board has already rejected the bill, calling it harmful to Waqf institutions. Owaisi has urged nationwide protests, emphasizing that the proposed amendments could weaken the rights of the Muslim community.
With growing opposition, the bill has become a focal point in discussions about religious autonomy and government control. As the debate continues, its outcome could have significant implications for religious property management and constitutional rights in India.
